Composition and Analysis

The course combines score studies with individual composition assignments. Principles of composition from the 20th century will be examined, and the implementation of these theories and principles in music from the 20th and 21st centuries will be shown.

The course can be substituted with courses in the MUSV31**-series.

Knowledge:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV3001

• has knowledge of a broad spectrum of musical styles from the 20th and 21st century
• has knowledge of style and structure in a number of representative musical works from the 20th and 21st century
• has knowledge of specific theories and analytical methods within the discipline
• has knowledge of creative processes in music, and processes of musical form

Skills:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV3001

• can independently write compositions in accordance to central compositional principles from the 20th and 21st century
• can independently analyze different musical works from the 20th and 21st century in accordance to relevant theories and analytical methods within the discipline
• can find and assess relevant musical recordings, scores and music literature, as an inspiration and support for his/her academic and artistic work

Lectures and written assignments.

Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.

The student will write one composition assignment every week. The principles of composition discussed in the lectures will be put into practice in these assignments. The assignments will be assessed by a tutor in the full session, where the students will give responses to each other.
