Arranging and Introduction to Composition

The course involves basic introductions to composition, the use of MIDI technology, and studio work.

Knowledge:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2010

• has knowledge of traditional harmony and elementary compositional techniques for smaller ensembles
• has knowledge of elementary instrumentation and can produce scores for smaller ensembles
• has knowledge of possibilities with music technology in arranging and composing

Skills:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2010

• can utilize traditional arranging and compositional techniques in a creative way
• knows how to set up a score and how to instrumentate for smaller ensembles
• can utilize music technology in both traditional and more experimental types of compositional techniques
• can make arrangements and compositions with a personal expression

Lectures and group instruction.

Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.

Up to 10 compulsory assignments must be submitted during the course, ending with a larger arrangement/composition exercise, which is part of the portfolio. In this final exercise, the student is allowed to use the tradition and style of the music from her/his background. The final exercise is rehearsed with an ensemble or written in Sibelius, and recorded in the studio or handed in as a Sibelius file as part of the portfolio. The assessment is based on the submitted score and mp3 file or Sibelius file.
