Techniques of Tonal Harmony with Conducting and Harmonic Analysis 2 / MIDI

The course is a continuation of Techniques of Tonal Harmony and Harmonic Analysis 1, and comprises an introduction to harmonization from late Baroque and until our time.

The course provides an introduction to traditional techniques of tonal harmony, and will expand the student's chord repertoire and harmonic understanding. This is done in combination with the student's own musical preferences. The exercises emphasize writing for choir. These exercises, in addition to a final recording in the studio, constitute the portfolio.

Conducting contains directing techniques and leading an ensemble.

The course module in basic music technology provides introductions to sound recording, sound editing, microphone choice, and studio and sound aesthetics.

Knowledge:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2008

• has knowledge of a selection of compositional techniques from the late baroque era up to our time
• has knowledge of different harmonic variants and an extended chord repertoire
• has knowledge of voice-leading principles and knows how to musically set a text in choral writing
• conducting of choirs and small ensembles
• has elementary knowledge of studio recordings and of leading a studio recording

Skills:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2008

• can utilize different compositional techniques in a creative way
• can utilize extended chords and simple harmonic substitutions
• can experiment with textual and sound expressions for voices
• can rehearse and conduct music for choirs and small ensembles
• can lead a studio recording
• can combine his/her own musical background with different compositional techniques

Lectures and group instruction. Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.

Up to 10 exercises in tonal harmony and harmonic analysis will be given.

Conducting involves pass/fail assessment as part of a practical presentation that must be approved before the final portfolio exam.

Basic Music Technology B continues the corresponding component in MUSV1017. Instruction in exercise groups. Assessment: pass/fail based on written exercises and participation in compulsory instruction.
