Digital Composition and Performance

The course is comprised of these main elements: Algorithmic composition and advanced audio synthesis techniques. Performance-oriented software, interactive use of music technology, live electronics.

Knowledge:
The candidate
-Has insight into aesthetic practice based on digital tools for music performance and composition
- Can identify common methods for algorithmic composition
- knows central aspects of advanced techniques for audio synthesis
- has insight on how their own developed computer programs can be utilized in combination with commercial tools
- has a conscious relation to their own creative process

Skills:

The candidate

-Can compose audio pieces based on algorithmic methods and combine these with advanced techniques for audio synthesis
- has practical experience with realtime control of automatic composition processes
- can devise technical solutions to specific musical problems within composition, improvisation and performance
- Can perform music based on these techniques

The course is taught in thematic blocks containing lectures, group projects and practical exercises. Each block is arranged as a concentrated workshop of 2-4 days duration. Information about exercises and requirements is given in Blackboard at semester start.
