About this course

Content

The course deals with sound and music in relation to multimedia. It addresses film sound, computer games, interactive media and digital storytelling. The knowledge is actively applied through practical exercises and use of relevant and accessible media technology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

The candidate
- Understands the basic interaction between auditory and visual perception
- Has basic knowledge of multimedia with a particular focus on the role of sound
- Understands basic theory on music and sound design in relation to moving pictures (film, tv and video games)
- Knows various strategies for the application of sound in non-linear media (primarily computer games)
- Has basic historical overview of the role of sound in movies, video art and computer games through representative examples

Skills:

The candidate
- Can analyze dramatic elements in a story and express them through sound and music
- Can compose, design and mix music and sound effects for film, including integration with voice and dialog
- Can create and organize sound material for computer games
- Masters the basic technological tools for integrating sound in film, video and computer games

Teaching methods

Lectures and practical exercises: The exercises may be practical assignments related to using music in combination with for example film, video, television and computer games. Information about exercises and requirements is given in Blackboard at semester start.
