Live Sound

Practical and theoretical introduction to basic sound ampification. Key topics are: signal flow in audio systems, acoustical challenges and limitations, specification of audio equipment, practical use of microphones for live sound, planning and carrying out concert and theatre sound, esthetics and ideals.The course is aimed at sound technicians and DJs, but also musicians can utilize the expertise in their own live situation

Knowledge:

The candidate

• has knowledge of the various components of a PA system and how they work
• are familiar with different specifications of sound equipment
• knows the basic techniques for processing and tuning sound in a concert situation
• knows basic knowledge about digital distribution of sound (via Dante)
• knows the technical terminology related to sound from stage
• has basic knowledge of sound esthetics and ideals for various musical expressions

Skills:

The candidate

• can adapt sound equipment to various constellations of musicians in a concert context
• can organize equipment based on a technical description (rider)
• can do sound work at a stage production
• can distribute audio digitally
• can recognize common problems for live sound and solve these
• can communicate with the musicians on stage in a way that enhances the work situation
• can reflect on his/her work as responsible sound technician at a stage production, and justify technical and esthetic decisions

Practically adapted lectures and exercises in the scheduled teaching: The exercises will be practical work on concert sound, sound installations or similar. Information about exercises and requirements is given in Canvas at semester start. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian.

Instruction, including scheduled exercises, is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.
