Sound Engineering

Practical work in a recording studio is central to this course. The course is comprised of the following main elements: Recording and editing sounds, microphones and microphone techniques, multitrack recording, analog/digital audio processing, Production aesthetics, different sound ideals.

Knowledge:

The candidate

• has knowledge about how a modern recording studio works
• is familiar with the applications and characteristics of various microphones
• is familiar with various basic techniques and tools for processing sound in the studio
• has fundamental knowledge about sound esthetics and ideals for various music productions

Skills:

The candidate

• can record various instruments and music styles
• can communicate with musicians in studio in a way the facilitates the work situation and the music production
• can mix and finish a studio production
• can reflect on his/her work in the studio and justify technical and esthetic choices

The teaching consists of weekly lectures followed by group practical exercises in the studio. There will be 10-12 exercise assignments in addition to the scheduled practical exercises.

Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English. Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.
