Theory of Church Music and professional knowledge

Church music theory: The course will give an overview of the historical development of the liturgy, and the main features of contemporary worship life. The course also gives a review of hymnology and hymn history, in addition to an introduction to the literary and musical character of the hymn.Industry knowledge: The course will raise awareness of church musical identity and professional understanding, and provide an overview of church organization and structure. The course will provide knowledge about the artistic and theological foundations of church music, as well as create reflection on church music.

Knowledge:

The candidate:

• has knowledge of liturgical and hymnological history and development
• has knowledge of the liturgical arrangements of the Church of Norway.
• has a conscious relationship to their own competence, musician identity and expectations in working life
• has insight into and knowledge of working life requirements and expectations, as well as knowledge of relevant institutions and partners
• has a reflective relationship to the role of church music in society

Skills:

The candidate

• can familiarize themselves with and evaluate relevant texts on church musical topics and reflect on their own professional practice
• can apply their knowledge in their own professional practice
• can formulate his/her professional knowledge in both writing and speech
• can update his/her knowledge in the field

Lectures in class: Equivalent to 1.5 hours per week. The course is a combination of weekly lessons and projects with lectures, discussions and groups.

Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.
