The History of Jazz

Three courses that focus on 3 different periodes in the history of jazz. Each course has 16 lessons.

1. Ca. 1920-1960: New Orleans, Chicago, Swing, Big band, Bebop, Cool.
2. 1960-1980: Modal, Free jazz, Jazzrock/fusion, ECM, continuation of earlier styles.
3. 1980-today: Digitalisation of music and music production, advancement of earlier styles, World music, other.

Knowledge:

The candidate:

• as knowledge about the main development of jazz from 1920 till today
• knows examples of music that represents the different directions of history of jazz
• has knowledge about how jazz-music has developed and been influenced by society
• has knowledge about how the development of technologies for recording, music production and distribution of music has influenced the history of jazz.

Skills:

The candidate:

• an identify and describe the characteristically musical features of different styles of jazz.
• can, based on musical recordings, recognize a selection of important jazz musicians
• can analyze and debate different recordings of jazz music
• can formulate her/his knowledge both oral and written.
