About this course

Content

The course includes mathematical descriptions of heat flow during casting in simple geometris, nucleation and phase boundary kinetics, growth of crystals with planar front, cells and dendrites. Multiphase reactions including eutectic and peritectic solidification. Flow of melt during solidification will be treated as well as micro- and macro segregation including inverse segregation. Precipitation of secondary phases including slags and gasses will be described. Introduction to modeling of solidification

Learning outcomes

The students should be able to describe how heat flow in simple geometries influences the solidification process. The students will have a good understanding for nucleation and growth of crystals rom the melt, both for planar, cellular and dendrittic growth front. They should also have a good understanding of polyphase reactions during solidification - eutectic and peritectic solidification. The students should be able to describe how flow of heat and mass influence the microstructure and casting defects. Furthermore, the students should be able to carry out simple solidification modeling tasks.

Teaching methods

Lectures, theoretical- and laboratory excercises with the following time distribution: Lectures (56 hours), written exercises (24 hours) and laboratory exercises (15 hours), and self-study hours (105 hours).
