About this course
Content
The course is given every second year, next time will be spring 2013.
The course gives an overview of the most common failure mechanisms in metals. The most important topics are:
Nondestructive testing, fractography, ductile and brittle fracture, fatigue, corrosion, wear, hydrogen degradation, metalworking defects, casting defects, and defects related to heat treatment and welding.
Learning outcomes
After finished course the student should be able to
- Explain the theory of non-destructive testing methods and give examples of their use.
- Explain the theories of brittle and ductile fractures and explain how one can distinguish between the two during a failure analysis.
- Give the characteristics of the fracture surface after different types of failures (fractography).
- Elaborate the theories for failure mechanisms operating during different types of fatigue, different types of corrosion, hydrogen damage, wear, metal forming, casting, heat treatment, and welding.
- Carry out a failure investigation and determine the cause of the failure.
Teaching methods
Lectures and laboratory work.
