About this course

Content

Human behaviour in accident situations. Estimation of human reliability (HEP). The role of organisation and leadership in the understanding of accidents. How to incorporate human and organizational factors in risk analysis models. Application of Bayesian Belief Network in accident analysis.

Learning outcomes

The objective is to develop competence for investigation and analysis of accidents. Also to give a basis for design of ship accidents database. And provide a basic understanding of accidents as phenomenon.

After completion of the course it is expected that the candidate posesses the following set of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge;
- can judge the feasibility of different models for documentation of accidents
- can differentiate between and use alternative accident modeling approaches
- can contribute to develop maritime accident analysis
- can use influence modeling as part of accident analysis
- understand and can use Bayes’ theorem as a basis for accident analysis
- has knowledge of Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs)and their application in reliability and safety analysis

Skills;
- Read and understand an accident report as basis for accident analysis
- Present accidental events and causes by means of influence type models
- Develop an accident model by means of a BBN modelling and analysis software package
- Generate and analyse a Bayesian Network model by means of a BBN modelling and analysis software package

General competence;
- Ability to assess the value and role of different methodological approaches in accident investigation and analysis.
- Ability to transform the contents of a report into a formal model to be used for analysis

Teaching methods

Lectures and study groups. Exercises, based on preparing a report on a given subject.
