Safety Managment and Risk Analysis in Aquaculture

The main objective of the course is to give the participants insight into efficient and good safety management in aquaculture. By "safety", we mean both safety to people, equipment and fish, as well as environmental damage and fish welfare. After completing the course, the participants should know the main elements of a safety management system (including risk analysis) and should be able to develop these and use them in practice in their own work. The course will focus on combining theoretical knowledge and practical examples. Topics to be covered include: - The risk picture - Safety management as a process - Laws, regulations and standards - Identification and analysis of risk - Accident investigation - Acceptable risk and acceptance criteria - Identification and choice of measure to reduce risk - Monitoring of safety - human, technical and organizational factors - Safety culture - Communication and consultation

Upon completion of the course, the participants should know: - the risk picture in aquaculture in Norway - of important laws and regulations and the regulatory authorities that are responsible for enforcing these - relevant terminology - how a safety management process should be established - the main elements of a safety management process and be able to describe the content of each of the main elements - methods that are used in the main elements, including their properties, strengths and weaknesses. Upon completion of the course, the participants should have the skills to: - use methods for implementing, operating and developing a safety management system - correctly use relevant terminology - choose and apply relevant methods for risk analysis - systematically identify and evaluate measures to reduce risk - perform investigation of incidents and accidents - apply methods for monitoring of the condition of a safety management system - communicate results from risk analyses In addition, the candidates should have skills to write a simple scientific report.

A variety of teaching methods and activities will be applied: - Lectures, focusing mainly on theory. Most of the lectures will traditional classroom lectures, but some video lectures will also be used. - Illustration of theory with practical examples, e.g. use of methods. - Discussion about various topics, where the participants can drawn on their own experience. - Practical use of methods and knowledge, mainly through various group tasks and exercises. - Preparation of a report covering a suitable topics within the overall topic of the course.
