Film Theory and Film Culture

The course offers an introduction to basic problems in film aesthetics and knowledge regarding motion picture theory. Central aspects of classical and modern film theory is studied in order to reveal the characteristics of film and television media, and also to recognize the similarities in how the various audiovisual media relate to the audience. The course covers both central international institutions and special features of the Norwegian film- and cinema system, and it discusses ideological aspects of institutions and films.

The course aims at providing insight into the development of central theoretical and analytical approaches to film in a historical context, and to give a critical understanding of the importance of the film media for culture and audience.

Lectures, screenings, seminars and tutorials - including continuous supervision and feedback on written assignments and oral presentations.

Requirements: Students must pass one written assignment of about 5 pages before final assessment can be made.

More on assessment: Final assessment is based on a take-home examination, duration 1 week, where the candidates will be asked to answer the examination questions in 10-15 pages. The examination is assessed by a letter grade.
