Advanced tribology and surface technology

Tribology is the science and engineering of surfaces in relative motion. The course deals with the main tribological mechanisms of component and construction failure. In this course you will learn about surface roughness, friction and lubrication regimes, wear and lubricant chemistry. The goal of the course is to give the students knowledge and skills in wear, friction, lubrication, lubricants for meeting the needs of the industry in their future professional careers.The aim is to provide the student with tools within the field of tribology to perform proper and adequate research.

• Theories of lubrication
• Lubricants and their chemistry
• Theories of wear
• Theories of friction

Skills:

• Ability to understand the different theories from multiple sources,and be able to use this theory on practical applications.
• Ability to report research results according to the understanding gained in the different theories
• Ability to prepare a presentation with the goal of communicating research results
• Be able to communicate and present the obtained knowledge

Lectures, teamwork, quizzes and a semester project. Parts of the course may use a flipped classroom model. Students need to submit a project to access examination. The lectures and exercises are in English. The examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for answering the exam.
