Artistic research in art and crafts

The course will qualify the student for independent exploration of materials, techniques and tools through an analytical alt-methodological approach. Different methods for examining handicraft processes and artistic development work are introduced in the teaching. Academically, practical-theoretical work is carried out through independent exploration in one or more of the main areas of the arts and crafts subject; art, design, architecture and visual communication. The course is artistic as well as methodologically oriented and deals with aspects related to the choices of a craftsman, artist, teacher or researcher: formulating a limited problem; creating a project design; using methods to produce research material; testing theories in the workshop or in practice; different analysis methods; interpretation; artistic and theoretical reflection and documentation. The creative work can be related to the research topic that forms the basis for writing the master's thesis.

• has in-depth knowledge of methodological and theoretical perspectives by researching art and applying the knowledge in own work with art and craft issues
• has in-depth knowledge of methods for generating, analyzing and interpreting empirical material through an art-based research approach
• has specialized and practice-based knowledge within a limited area in the field of didactic research

Skills

The student

• can develop a problem formulation for a project design in the arts and crafts field based on their own creative work
• can use an art methodological approach to independent artistic development work
• is able to orientate, analyze, assess and use relevant sources from theory and previous artistic development work
• has in-depth skills in the systematic exploration of materials, tools and techniques
• can place their artistic development work in the field and describe and argue for chosen positioning

• is able to analyze and discuss methodological and research ethical issues in the arts and crafts field
• is able to describe, analyze and communicate their own and others' artistic development work to professionals and the general public
• can act innovatively in the executive and theoretical part the field - can contribute constructively in collaboration with others

Lectures, discussions, group work and independent work related to practical work in a workshop. The work is related to developing a project design and working practically with it; analytical examination of one's own creative work in a workshop, literature search, own writing, multimodal work (written, visual and oral presentations).
