Methodology and English Didactics

This course focuses on philosophy of science and different research methods in the English subject and their applicability in different contexts. Various research paradigms and the relationship between ontology, epistemology, and choice of research methods will be discussed. During the course, students will begin their own master’s research project. Therefore, students will be assisted in formulating problem statements, establishing theory and locating previous research and related methods. Students will simultaneously start writing their master's thesis with emphasis on the structure and presentation of the thesis as well as proper usage of reference systems.

The student has

• advanced knowledge about different research paradigms and the relationship between ontological and epistemological perspectives and choice of research methods
• advanced knowledge of characteristics of different research designs and research methods
• advanced knowledge about different methods of data collection and analysis of empirical data
• advanced knowledge about ethical aspects of research
• advanced knowledge about presentation of research

Skills

The student can

• under supervision, formulate research questions that have relevance within English language and literature/culture and subject didactics
• design and carry out independent empirical investigations
• make justified choices regarding methods of data collection and analysis of empirical data
• critically analyze sources (discipline-specific literature and data sets) and use them to structure and formulate disciplinary reasoning

General knowledge

The student can

• outline and justify methodologies as they pertain to the research focus
• analyze relevant problem statements related to the teaching of English in schools
• present results of empirical investigations
• present substantial independent work and master academic language of the English subject and genres
• contribute to new knowledge and innovation processes in the English subject in schools

The course will include lectures, individual and group assignment work, discussions, and oral presentations. All students are expected to contribute actively.
