Chemistry in primary school (1-7)

The course builds on chemistry knowledge from the courses Naturfag 1 and Naturfag 2 and will make the student capable to plan science teaching to increase pupils' understanding in chemistry. The course is informed by relevant research in chemistry didactics in a primary school context, and shall prepare the student to find, evaluate and apply such research in teaching. The course also trains students in organizing and maintaining equipment and chemicals for science classrooms.

KNOWLEDGE

The student

• has insight into research based learning progressions within primary level chemistry
• has insight into research pedagogical content knowledge and scientific practices in chemistry relevant for primary school and can apply it in science teaching
• has in-depth knowledge on proper organisation and maintenance of chemistry equipment and chemicals in science classrooms

SKILLS

• can find, evaluate and apply artefacts and locations to provide rich experiences with chemistry topics for pupils at the primary level
• can plan for science teaching that supports understanding in chemistry for pupils at the primary level
• can apply pedagogical content knowledge and scientific practices relevant in a primary school context in planning science teaching
• can compute, prepare, label and evaluate the risks associated with solutions of chemicals for the science classroom
• can locate, organize and apply chemistry equipment and chemicals for science teaching
