About this course

Content

In this course the student will go deeper into the mathematical and didactical topics from Mathematics 1; for example, there will be more of a focus on research than in Mathematics 1. In this course we will work with topics that are common in the lower grades in school, such as number theory, algebra, statistics and probability, geometry and fractions. The didactical topics will include identifying, characterizing, and understanding the phenomena and processes relevant to teaching and learning in the lower grades. These phenomena will be closely connected to the mathematical topics that we will discuss in the course.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

At the end of the term, the student

  • is able to explain the content of theory and research-based knowledge related to different kinds of reasoning and mathematical proofs in the main mathematical topics in grades 1 through 7
  • is able to explain the systematical, deductive structure of mathematical theories, both in general and with examples related to geometry or number theory
  • is able to summarize and exemplify the content in a selection of litterature in didactics of mathematics
  • is able to explain key concepts, ideas and connections in the mathematical topics involved in grades 1 through 7
  • is able to explain the progression of mathematical topics in elementary school

Skills

At the end of the term, the student

  • is able to use theory and research-based knowledge about mathematics and the didactics of mathematics to develop appropriate teaching in grades 1 through 7
  • is able to explore and prove relevant statements in the mathematics of grades 1 through 7
  • is able to assess students' learning in mathematics and use this assessment to adjust their teaching
  • can make use of a wide range of different appropriate teaching methods and activities related to selected mathematical topics, based in both theory and research-based knowledge
  • can work research based and systematically to map mathematical learning difficulties and to teach students with such difficulties

Teaching methods

Teaching methods will include in-class lessons, working with tasks both individually and in groups, discussions, and optionally oral or written student presentations. The students independence, analytical skills, and reflection levels will be developed using explorative activities.
