Mathematics 2 (1-7) Module 2

In this course we will be working on identifying, characterizing, and understanding the phenomena and processes relevant to teaching and learning mathematics in the lower grades. In this course the coursework is a process involving supervision to plan and carry out a development and research project that results in a written R&D-thesis. In this project the student(s) should aim to gain deeper knowledge of some mathematical or didactical topic, and also learn about relevant research methods. There will be more of a focus on research than in Mathematics 1.

Knowledge

At the end of the term, the student

• is able to present detailed descriptions of research and theories about a chosen mathematical or didactical topic that is relevant for grades 1 through 7
• can explain and exemplify research methods in didactics of mathematics
• can explain what a project in research and development within the didactics of mathematics is
• elaborate on the documentation related to research and development work connected to topics in education in mathematics focused on primary school.

Skills

At the end of the term, the student

• is able to use research-based knowledge about mathematics and the didactics of mathematics in teaching grades 1 through 7
• is able to do simple research in the didactics of mathematics that is in line with the ethical perspectives of research

General Competence

At the end of the term, the student

• can initiate and lead development projects related to teaching in mathematics
• can participate and contribute in research and development projects and other collaborative projects in order to improve the teaching of mathematics

The student will be working on a resarch and development project (FoU-project) on mathematics and teaching mathematics in the lower grades. This procject will result in a written task that is handed in by the end of the semester. Other teaching methods will include in-class lessons, working with tasks both individually and in groups, discussions, and optionally oral or written student presentations. Literature, teaching materials and other teaching aids will be given in both Norwegian and English. Students are expected to master both languages at a level that enables the use of these teaching aids. The teaching methods are intending to support the work on the FoU-project. The students’ independence, analytical skills, and reflection levels will be developed using explorative activities.
