Pedagogy and Pupil-related Skills 2 (5-10)

In the subject Pedagogy and Pupil Knowledge 2, the child and youth are at the center. The course deepens knowledge about children's and young people's learning, development, bildung, and socialization in today's school, with emphasis on how the teacher can contribute to an inclusive and safe learning environment characterized by diversity.

Through active participation, the student will develop knowledge, skills, and general competence related to children's and young people's development, differentiated instruction and individualized support, learning environments and relationships, cultural, linguistic, religious, and philosophical diversity, conversations with pupils, and collaboration with homes and external partners.

The course connects theory, research, and practice, and provides the student with an expanded basis for professional practice in encounters with children, youth, and guardians in a diverse school setting.

Knowledge

The student has knowledge of:

• children's and young people's development and prerequisites for learning
• key principles that promote inclusion, differentiated instruction, and individualized support
• children in grief and crisis, abuse against children, and difficult life situations that children and young people may encounter
• diversity in children's and young people's living conditions in various social, linguistic, and cultural contexts
• religions and worldviews in Norway and their significance for children and young people in school
• school-home collaboration and the school's external partners

Skills

The student can:

• reflect on and facilitate an inclusive learning environment in pupil groups characterized by diversity
• apply subject-specific terminology and justify pedagogical choices based on theory and research on learning, development, and socialization
• explain and discuss the relationship between differentiated instruction and individualized support
• plan, conduct, and evaluate conversations with children and young people as a basis for pedagogical work and research and development (R&D).
• justify, communicate, and use documents that safeguard human rights and children's rights

General Competence

The student can:

• discuss didactic consequences, challenges, and opportunities in a school characterized by diversity
• engage in dialogue with children and guardians about children's and young people's learning, development, and bildung on a reflective and professional basis, and safeguard worldview diversity in collaboration with children and guardians
• plan, implement, and assess teaching and initiatives that promote inclusion and differentiated instruction in the learning environment
• facilitate good collaboration between school and home, and with external partners

The teaching emphasizes student activity and the connection between theory, research, and practice. The learning methods will vary between lectures, seminars, group work, practice-oriented assignments, and individual work. Students will participate in academic discussions, writing processes, and reflection tasks that strengthen their ability to analyze and discuss pedagogical issues.

The course encourages active participation, and attendance is mandatory (minimum 75%). Students are expected to contribute to academic communities and collaborative practices that reflect the working methods of the teaching profession.
