About this course

Content

In this course students will work with mathematics education and pure mathematic topics that will be important for teachers in Year 5-10. A special emphasis will be placed on algebra and algebraic reasoning in topics such as generalisation, equations, functions, analysis, different representations, and transitions between representations. Students will also work on mathematical obstacles, and assessments in mathematical education.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge
The student
- has knowledge in mathematical analysis including derivation, integration, and mathematical models, and can relate these concepts to mathematical education
- has knowledge of different aspects of working with equations
- has knowledge of generalisation and algebrafying
- has knowledge of ICT in education, especially the use of CAS tools and how they should be used in education
- has knowledge of central theories about the challenges in mathematical education and how to these can be identified
- has knowledge about the importance of assessment for learning and the connection between assessment and learning
Skills
The student
- can use graph plotters, spreadsheets, and CAS tools in education
- can use different forms of assessment in mathematics
- can adapt his or her own teaching to suit the needs of the learners
- can assess learners’ goal achievement with and without grades
General competency
The student
- can participate in development work in mathematical education

Teaching methods

During the course there will be lectures, individual and group task assignments, discussions, and presentations. Inquiry based education is meant to facilitate students’ independence, analytical skills, and critical reflection.
