Religion, worldviews and ethics in society and school

The course sets out a systematic, practical and didactic study of religion and worldviews, exemplified through Judaism, Christianity and Islam. An introduction to ethics is also given.

The students will become familiar with key research traditions both in relevant subjects and in the didactics of the subject.

The scope of the syllabus and teaching related to KRLE subject topics will be roughly the same as in the primary school curriculum.

Knowledge

The student

• has knowledge of the school curriculum and the development of the religion and worldview education in Norway.

• has knowledge of didactic approaches and research traditions in the school subject and the subject in teacher education.

• has knowledge of the history of religions and worldviews in Norway, including the religious and worldview history of Sami and national minorities, and diversity within these.

• has knowledge of and is familiar with the school's use of seasons and festivals with examples from Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Sami Christian tradition, as cultural heritage.

• has knowledge of and is familiar with the school’s use of texts, narratives, teachings, rituals and other practices and ethics with examples from Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

• has knowledge of and knows the use in school of aesthetics with examples from Judaism and Islam

• has knowledge of basic ethics and the role of basic ethics as a background for understanding ethical and moral issues

• has knowledge of pluralization, secularization and criticism of religion and worldviews as a teaching topic and background orientation for other parts of the subject

Skills

The student

• is capable of planning, carrying out and assessing teaching in the school subject KRLE as basis for pupil-oriented assessment

• is capable of using varied methods that integrate the basic skills

• can apply basic ethical theories to subjects from professional ethics and to student-oriented area ethics

• can identify and deal with challenges related to how the school and students encounter diversity of worldviews and ethical diversity

General competence

The student

• is capable of explaining his/her view of what being a KRLE-teachers entails

• is capable of critical reflection on the school subject and disseminating research on children, religion and worldviews

• can explain and take a position on ethical issues that concern the school and the students

The course is organized with fixed weekly lessons. Excursions may take place outside normal teaching hours. Deadlines for completion / delivery of written and oral work requirements is given at the start of the semester. Both written and oral work requirements, and other learning activities, shall support and promote the candidate's work in achieving the course's learning outcomes. The teaching methods alternate between lectures, seminars, group work, individual work, conversations, discussions, as well as oral and written student presentations. Academic discussions and other academic interaction are important forms of work and learning. For this reason, several sessions that contain this will have mandatory attendance. Which sessions this applies to will be stated in the semester plan. Students are expected to come prepared to the lessons, so that they can contribute to the learning activities in the best possible way.
