Norwegian (L1) 1 (5-10) Module 1: Language and Literature

Norwegian 1 (for students studying for teaching the grades 5 - 10) course 1 is an introductory course in Norwegian language and literature. The course focuses on linguistic and literary subjects, text choice, and subject specific didactic knowledge teaching with emphasis on middle primary classes. During the course, the students will also develop their own language and text skills, as well as their teaching abilities. Students shall be assessed in bokmål.

KNOWLEDGE

The student

• has extensive knowledge of the language as a system and the language in practical use
• has knowledge of language identity, Norwegian as a second language, and multilingual practice
• has extensive knowledge of what characterises oral, written, and multimodal texts in different genres and media
• has knowledge of the history of children's literature
• has knowledge of a range of fictional texts in different genres and media for children, young people, and adults
• has basic knowledge about hermeneutics as theory and method.
• has basic knowledge of language didactics and literature didactics

SKILLS

The student

• is capable of using knowledge of language in language-stimulating work and in accounting for academic choices that aim to promote oral and written language development for all pupils, with special attention to students in upper primary classes
• is capable of using knowledge of what characterizes different text types and genres in work with written texts in different media
• is capable of facilitating teaching in upper primary classes in a way that enables pupils to read, write, and discuss fiction and non-fiction texts for different purposes in different genres and media.

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student

• is capable of facilitating upper primary pupils’ further development of basic language skills on their way toward becoming literate language users who can participate actively in the classroom and in other social arenas
• is capable of planning, carrying out, and reflecting on the teaching of key topics in the subject Norwegian and explaining subject-didactic choices to pupils
• is capable of assessing his/her own practice on the basis of applicable curricula, knowledge of the subject and subject-didactic insight

Students will encounter varied forms of teaching including lectures, seminaries, and work in smaller groups. Students are expected to communicate actively in different written and oral fora with their professors and their fellow students throughout the course. Active work with the curriculum is required through self-study as well as working in groups and with the digital learning platform. In addition to compulsory requirements, the students are expected to participate actively throughout the course.
