Summer School in Global Health in Nepal

The overall objective for the summer school is to give the students an experience of health care and health challenges in a low income country, in this case Nepal, and how the socioeconomic level of the country and it`s inhabitants affects health care and disease.

The course will focus on global health challenges that are most relevant in low income countries;

• Mother-child-health
• Infectious diseases
• Health services in low income countries
• Health services in rural areas

The participants are responsible for transport and living costs.

After completing and passed the course4 MD3003 the students should have achieved the following:

Knowledge of:

• Describe the epidemiology, clinical features and possible investigations for the most common/important:
  • infectious diseases
  • childhood diseases
  • diseases and challenges related to reproductive health
  • accidents/traumas and intoxications and the background for them
  • non-communicable diseases, included mental health, and the background for them
  • socioeconomic status and cultural traditions affects diseases and health related behavior
  • the political/developmental situation and the country`s economic level affects health and health care with Nepal as a case

Objectives:

• increased understanding in how to examine children, women in labour and patients with infectious diseases through participation in ward rounds and observation of procedures
• be able to formulation of clinical problems within the above mentioned medical areas and be able to diagnose the diseases from these examinations.

General competence:

• general competence and experience in health care and health challenges in a low income country, in this case Nepal, and how the socioeconomic level of the country and it`s inhabitants affects health care and disease.

The teaching will consist of lectures, clinical work, participation in morning meetings, ward rounds and on-call duty at the hospital. A two days visit to at rural health care center will be arranged.
