An introduction is also given to fundamental biology and systematics. The course will give the student knowledge about different groups of marine plants and animals, their development, structure and anatomy, as well as their physiological adaptations to life in the ocean. To what extent different groups of marine organisms are utilized commercially will also be covered, and potential sustainability challenges of this exploitation. The student will learn different biological terms that will be used as an integrated part of the education. The subject will have an emphasis on the marine environment in Norway, including knowledge about the most common species of invertebrates, fish and marine mammals.
