About this course

Content

The topic gives an introduction to biomarine industry. The topic will give insight in both fishery and aquaculture. How marine resources are exploited will be taught through processing and production of seafood and marine ingredients. It will emphasize the presentation of value chains including fishery, harvesting and aquaculture. UNs sustainability goals and perspectives will be included and discussed in connection to the different levels of value chains.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge - the student:

  • should be able to assess sustainable innovation opportunities in the biomarine area.
  • should have knowledge of UN's sustainable development goals
  • have knowledge of important marine by-products and ingredients
  • know examples of bioprospecting
  • know the Norwegian fishing industry and have knowledge about fishing methods
  • knowledge of the instrument for funding R & D

Skills - the student:

  • should be able to reflect on the sustainable possible use of various marine raw materials and constituents
  • to know opportunities and challenges in different parts of the industry
  • knowledge of selected companies in the marine value chain

Competence - the student:

  • should know current innovation and innovation processes within selected marine fields
  • know current Norwegian research institutions and marine clusters, and inhabit an overview of value creation in different parts of the biomarine industry

Teaching methods

Total work load is expected to be 200 hours. This includes lectures (36 hours). Guest lectures from industry (4-6 hours). Excursions to different companies (4 excursions of 4 hours each) followed by individual reports. Group work with written report and oral presentation. It is expected that students spend 120 hours for self study.
