About this course
Content
Course:
- Taught and supervised in Norwegian.
- Provides students with fundamental technical insight into selected machines and technical systems.
The course focuses on:
- Identification of failure modes, failure causes, and failure mechanisms in selected machines and technical systems.
- Identification of condition parameters to detect degradation in selected machines and technical systems.
The course is divided into the following modules:
Module 0: Failure Mode Analysis (FMECA - Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis), Root Cause Analyses (RCA).
Module 1: Structure, operation, failure modes, failure causes, failure mechanisms, and condition parameters of electromechanical machines, including:
- Electric motors
- Generators
- Transformers
- Pumps
- Turbines
- Internal combustion engines
- Compressors
Module 2: Structure, operation, failure modes, failure causes, failure mechanisms, and condition parameters of power transmission machine parts, including:
- Key connections
- Couplings
- Variator
- Belts
- Chains
- Gear transmissions
- Bearings
Module 3: Structure, operation, failure modes, failure causes, failure mechanisms, and condition parameters of equipment and systems for:
- Fluid transport
- Power transmission, including:
- Hydraulic systems
- Pneumatic systems
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the candidate will have the following fundamental knowledge, skills, and general competence related to selected machines and systems:
Knowledge:
The candidate has knowledge of:
- The structure and operation of selected machines and systems.
- Failure modes, failure causes, and failure mechanisms in selected machines and systems.
- Condition parameters that can be used to diagnose selected machines and systems.
- Operation and maintenance of selected machines and systems.
Skills:
The candidate can use their knowledge to:
- Perform failure mode analysis on selected machines and systems.
- Select condition parameters for diagnosing selected machines and systems.
General Competence:
The candidate develops the ability to conduct and document failure analyses (FMECA) and identify condition parameters for machines, equipment, and systems.
Teaching methods
In addition to physical teaching, lectures will be streamed and recordings will be made available on NTNU’s digital learning platform.
Learning methods and activities include, but are not limited to:
- Interactive lectures using digital tools
- Digital exercises
- Exercises in the classroom
- Laboratory exercises in groups
- Project work / problem-based learning in groups (graded semester assignment)
Students will submit a graded semester assignment in groups. It is expected that students themselves will be the driving force in completing the semester assignment.
Mandatory coursework requirements:
To be eligible for the exam, the candidate must have submitted and received approval for the following:
- Digital quizzes - a specified number (individual submission)
- Registered in a semester assignment group (individual registration)
- Submitted group collaboration agreement for the semester assignment group (group submission)
- Submitted A3 poster presenting the semester assignment (group submission)
The mandatory coursework requirements must be submitted on NTNU’s digital learning platform.
