About this course

Content

Course curriculum is based on general introduction to mechanical engineering in particular. The course

  • Provides an exciting introduction to mechanical engineering, with a focus on creative and systematic design, development, and production of products.
  • Explores the use of digital tools such as:
    • 3D modeling
    • Simulation
    • Sustainable methods for innovative product development
  • Practical tasks and projects enable students to:
    • Design and build models using manual and digital tools
    • Understand how technology and sustainability are integrated into mechanical engineering processes
  • The semester project gives students the opportunity to:
    • Apply creative ideas in a systematic development process
    • Evaluate quality, risk, and sustainability in product development
  • Emphasizes:
    • Teamwork
    • Reflection on the role of digitalisation in mechanical engineering
    • Development of the ability to communicate technical issues in a structured and engaging way

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • The breadth of the mechanical engineering profession, with a focus on systematic product development, design, process development, and sustainable solutions.
  • Creative and structured methods for designing and developing products, with the integration of sustainability principles throughout the development process.
  • Fundamental principles of quality assurance and sustainable development through systematic product and process risk assessments.

SKILLS

The candidate can:

  • Apply creative methods for idea generation and a systematic approach to design and development processes, integrating sustainability as a key factor in product and process development.
  • Use digital tools for visualization, modeling, and analysis of products, while combining these with manual techniques to enhance both product development and sustainable solutions.
  • Perform risk analyses for both products and processes, with an emphasis on quality assurance and sustainability in development projects.

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The candidate:

  • Can work in teams and either lead or contribute to systematic processes for developing and executing projects, with a focus on quality and sustainability.
  • Has developed skills in reading scientific articles and writing scientific reports, and can communicate complex professional issues in a structured manner.
  • Learns through practical projects how to plan, organize, and implement design and development projects, with a particular focus on sustainability, quality, and risk.

Teaching methods

Pedagogical methods:

  • Individual assignments
  • Group work under supervision
  • Lectures on chosen topics
  • Quizzes, surveys, and short virtual exercises during lectures to promote active participation and immediate feedback

Physical participation and supervision:

  • The course includes mandatory on-campus seminars arranged throughout the semester. Students are expected to participate actively in these as part of the learning activities.
  • Online evening sessions are organised specifically for flexible (online) students, where on-campus students may also participate.
  • Teams (group-) channels are used as an academic contact platform for questions and dialogue with the lecturers, similar to informal supervision offered on campus.
  • For students following the flexible (online) version of the course, the same requirements for participation in seminars, supervision, and communication apply as for on-campus students.
