Content

Thermodynamics (5stp) Fall:
- Transport of energy: radiation, thermal conductivity, heat transfer. Thermodynamic properties of pure
substances.
- Phase states: solids, liquids, gas and plasma.
- Phase transitions: gas and liquid in mixed phase.
- Thermodynamic quantities: internal energy, enthalpy, and entropy.
- Phase transitions and processes: polytropic, adiabatic, isothermal, isochoric, and isobaric.
- First law of thermodynamics: stationary and non-stationary processes.
- Second law of thermodynamics: reversible and irreversible processes.
- Thermodynamical cycles: energy production, heat pumps, and refrigeration cycles.

Basics of Mechanical Engineering (5stp) Spring:
This basic course gives an introduction and general overview of Mechanical Engineering field with focus on product development.
- Idea generation methods based on user's needs and wishes, desired functions and application situations.
- Product development methodology.
- Modelling of technical systems and processes.
- Prototype building by digital and manual means and tools.
- Visualization.
- Products environmental impact during its life cycle.

Learning outcomes

Thermodynamics:
Knowledge:
-The candidate knows the fundamental concepts of determining the characteristics of a thermodynamic system.
-The candidate is aware of basic principles of energy conservation, energy transfer and energy conversion in conjunction with thermodynamics processes.
-The candidate is aware of relevant practical applications in thermodynamics.
Skills:
-The candidate can calculate elementary thermodynamic processes, including processes involving different
engineering devices.
-The candidate can determine thermodynamic variables by applying property tables.
Basics of Mechanical Engineering:
Knowledge:
The candidate:
- has insight into the product development methodology based on the field of Mechanical Engineering.
- acknowledge the importance of human factor in the product design
- has understanding of products environmental impact
- has knowledge of the role product development plays in the industry
- understands the role of teamwork in the product development

The candidate:
- can utilize sketches and digital models as a working form during product development process
- can apply digital and manual tools for prototype building
- can model technical systems and processes based on practical and theoretical challenges

The candidate:
-has insight into health, safety and the environment and consequences of selected solutions within field of
Mechanical Engineering.
-has insight into innovation processes and working methods in order to develop and test prototypes
-has insight into the group dynamics and is able to work in the project team
-can impart knowledge within its field to different audiences in both written and spoken
-knows of the trends in technology development of components and system solutions
