Master Thesis in Mathematical Sciences

The Master Thesis is done in mathematics or statistics. As a rule the work on the thesis is divided between two terms, namely the third and fourth terms of the Master program. Students should plan the choice of courses at the beginning of the study. The selected courses should be relevant for the field of specialisation and at the same time meet the breadth requirements.

Work on the Thesis is the core of the master program. The Master Thesis should be an independent scientific work (that could be a kind of survey) where the student shows understanding of the current research and/or relevant theories and methods that are important with respect to the topic of the Thesis.

Study of current scientific articles and books under the supervision of a faculty member. Results obtained when working on the Thesis could be also presented in a seminar. The thesis should reflect on its relevance with respect to thesustainable development goals by UN. After the thesis has been submitted and approved, the candidate must pass a final oral examination (cf. § 5-3 in "Supplementary Regulations for programmes in the natural sciences at NTNU"). During this examination the candidate gives an oral public presentation of the thesis, with a duration of about 30 minutes. After the presentation oral feedback on the presentation is given, and then the thesis will be evaluated and a grade will be determined.
