Norwegian 2 (5-10) module 1

This course emphasizes that the subject of Norwegian is an identity- and culture-driven subject in continuous flux, with important underlying historical aspects. Thus, the course will focus on two main areas:

A: Language in use - oral and written - Further writing education - Oral texts in the classroom - Communication on new text media

This subject area will provide the student with extensive knowledge in the many contexts in which students of language have an interest. It aims to explore older and newer text arenas including both rhetoric and communication theory as a conceptual framework. Through concrete work with various oral and written types of texts (among other texts written by pupils) the students have a unique opportunity to develop knowledge of how pupils' literacy can further develop and how it can be assessed.

B: Multimodality in school - Literacy for a new time - Multimodal texts in school - Traditional genres and remediation - Text criticism and assessing literacy

L1 teachers meet pupils with experience from a multitude of texts in a variety of media. Teachers must be able to use this in their teaching. Within this area, various genres on screen and paper will be studied and evaluated, and information technology, film and theater will be put into a Norwegian didactic context. The course will also emphasize the students' own digital literacy.

Knowledge

The candidate

• has knowledge of the school subject Norwegian as a key subject for enlightenment and identity development in a multicultural and multimedia-driven society
• has extensive knowledge of how pupils at the upper primary and lower secondary level develop their writing skills, both pupils with Norwegian as a first language and pupils with Norwegian as a second language
• is familiar with subject-didactic research and development work on writing proficiency
• is familiar with theories on multimodal texts
• has knowledge of how pupils’ further development of oral skills can be facilitated

Skills

The candidate

• is capable of guiding and assessing oral, written and multimodal texts by pupils at the upper primary and lower secondary level, and can give grounds for the assessment
• has further developed knowledge of texts and knowledge texts produced by pupils at the upper primary and lower secondary level trough practical work with analyzing written texts in different genres
• is capable of reading, analyzing, interpreting, and assessing multimodal texts, and placing them in a wider cultural and public context

General competence

The candidate

• has experience in using digital media and is capable of facilitating the use of current multimedia technology for different purposes relevant to the subject
• has developed theoretical, analytical, and subject-didactic knowledge of work with texts in different genres and media

Session-based teaching, part-time study. The digital learning platform is used actively between the sessions, for submission of written works and communication with fellow students. The course includes student presentations, the sharing of experiences, lectures, and workshops. Throughout the study, the students' own writing and reflections on the connections between theory and practice experiences, is central.
