Numercy as a key skill 1 (1-7) module 2

The main focus of this course will be numeracy as it applies to other subjects. For example, we will examine how numeracy can factor into cooking, knitting patterns, and measurement in different subjects and in different languages. Additionally, the use of timelines will be central to several topics in this course.

The course will also address how numeracy factors into achieving competence in a variety of academic subjects. The ability to interpret and understand graphic representations and presentations has a clear social perspective, and this social perspective is emphasized in this course.
Lastly, we will develop competence within guidance methodology; in so doing, our students will themselves become valuable resources within their schools and municipalities. Through this transformation, the students of this course will gain awareness of how a mastery of numeracy is a crucial asset in the mentoring and guiding of others.

Knowledge
The student has
- knowledge of how numeracy is included in different subjects, on the subjects' own terms
- knowledge of how numeracy is included in selected academic subjects
- knowledge of how numeracy should be regarded across other academic subjects, rather than isolated within a single subject
- knowledge of some basic principles regarding mentoring

Skills
The student can
- consider how statistics and graphic representations are included in multiple subjects, and can help students create and interpret graphic representations
- facilitate teaching in an academic subject with respect to numeracy as a basic skill, and assist the pupils to achieve the competences in that subject
- give a relevant presentation of basic numeracy skills, as they apply to a selected subject

General competence
- Students can supervise fellow students and/or colleagues at their own schools regarding numeracy as a basic skill

The course is part-time, ICT-supported, and based on seminars. Through our lectures, discussions, and in-class activities, we will apply a variety of pedagogical methods; therefore, active and positive student participation is essential. This includes discussions, lectures, group work, practice assignments, presentations, and the use of digital tools. Students must be actively involved in academic discussions regarding numeracy as a basic skill.
