Numercy as a key skill 1 (1-7) module 1

The main focus of this course will be what it means to calculate, and how different tasks require different strategies. Computational strategies, mental calculations, estimates, and number sense are key concepts. We will engage in modeling and problem solving regarding three main topics: Numbers, Measurement, and Statistics. In addition to this, we will discuss how numeracy is a necessary element in the process of decision-making regarding social issues in a reflective and critical manner. The course also focuses on interpreting and analyzing curricula and knowing how basic skills are implemented in these plans. Analysis and discussion related to national tests regarding numeracy are also included in the course. Lastly, this will course also focus on the knowledge of how tests are made through analytical tools and assessment.

Knowledge
The student has
- knowledge of what it means to compute, and that computing in different situations often requires a variety of strategies or different ways of calculating (for example, mental computing, estimation, and the use of calculator or paper/pen)
- knowledge of the concept (number sense), and the importance of this concept regarding problem solving in different school subjects.
- knowledge about the impact numeracy has in school and society in general
- knowledge of how numeracy and relevant analytical tools apply to national testing

Skills
Students can
- facilitate pupils' use of different units of measurement (time, length, weight, etc.) in different school subjects, with a focus on units of measurement used in other countries and in other languages
- interpret and analyze curricula and know the role that basic skills have in these plans
- assist the implementation of basic skills in education in general, and work regarding the assessment of national tests in particular

General competence
The student
- can participate and contribute to pupils' work with numeracy within different school subjects and/or in interdisciplinary activities
- has practical experience regarding students' work with the use of numbers, measurement, and statistics in various subjects

The course is part-time, ICT-supported, and based on seminars. In our lecture-discussions we will apply a variety of methods, therefore student activity will be essential. This includes discussions, lectures, group work, practice assignments, presentations, and the use of digital tools. There will be also be an emphasis on students being actively involved in academic discussions regarding numeracy as a basic skill.
