Natural Science 1 (5-10) module 2

The course Science 1 (module 1 and 2) gives a background in the science and pedagogical content knowledge enabling the students to teach science in primary and lower secondary education. Module 2 deals with among others biology topics of physiology and organisms' building blocks, from genes to organs. In physics the module offers the topics of mechanics, electricity, magnetism and energy. Knowledge on technology and its application are also important topics. Further, the module gives insight into pedagogical content knowledge related to students' conceptions, deep learning and cross-disciplinarity of education for sustainable development and technology.

KNOWLEDGE

The student has knowledge on

• misconceptions or pupils' conceptions within relevant topics
• deep learning in science
• the contribution of science in education for sustainable development
• cells and organisms' life process - has knowledge on human and animal physiology
• forces and movements
• basic magnetism and electric circuits
• energy quality and different forms of energy
• connection between technology and science, how technology can be taught cross-disciplinary, and how this can be done with students

SKILLS

The student can:

• apply science knowledge in conversation with students about the nature and the phenomena in nature
• implement strategies in teaching for deep learning, and reflect didactically
• implement school relevant technology projects from ideas to products, and reflect didactically
• evaluate technological products and use them as teaching resources

The student

• has good insight in own's role and practice as a science teacher
• has insight in relevant scientific and profession related ethical issues
• has good insight in the role of science in cross-disciplinary teaching of sustainable development and technology

Science 1 (5-10) Module 2 is a part time study. It is organized in three times three-day seminars. A variety of working methods will be employed. Student active, self study, individual and group works will be important parts of the course. The students are expected to actively use the library or other source of information. Use of ICT-tools within the science topics will be part of development of the students' digital competency. The students will be assessed formatively and summatively. They will get tasks to do in-between the seminars; the kind of tasks related to their own practice as teachers.
