Norwegian 1 (1-7) topic 1: Norwegian for grades 1-3

Norwegian 1, topic1 focuses on initial training in reading and writing, the development of oral skills, basic Norwegian-language literature, and subject didactic questions. The course also focuses on the close relationship between language and language use, and how it relates to identity development. In addition, it emphasizes that students should develop their own language skills and their own textual and communication skills. The students will utilize varied work methods and practical-aesthetic approaches.

Knowledge

The candidate

• has extensive knowledge of children's language development at the lower primary levels.
• has knowledge of linguistic identity, Norwegian as a second language, and multilingual practice
• has knowledge of what characterizes oral and multimodal texts
• has knowledge of a selection of fictional texts in different genres and mediums, with emphasis on literature for children
• has broad knowledge of methods in primary reading and writing education
• has knowledge of mapping tests and using physical and digital teaching aids, for instruction at the lower primary levels

Skills

The candidate

• is capable of using knowledge about language and language development in language-stimulation work, and explaining subject-didactic choices that aim to promote oral and written language development for all pupils at the lower primary levels.
• is capable of using knowledge about what characterises different texts and genres, within various media
• is able to plan, implement, and evaluate student and class discussions
• is capable of using different methods in primary reading and writing education, and adapting training for pupils with different backgrounds and varying skills in Norwegian
• is able to map and evaluate reading and writing skills, and provide learning-enhancing responses to all introductory pupils
• can assess digital and other Norwegian language teaching aids for lower primary level education.

General competence

The candidate

• can facilitate introductory pupils' development of basic language skills, so that these pupils become literate language users who can participate actively in the classroom and in other social arenas
• is able to plan and carry out the teaching of key topics in the academic subject of Norwegian, and explain pupil-adapted, subject-didactic choices.
• is capable of assessing his/her own practice with applicable curricula, knowledge of the subject, and subject-didactic insight as a basis

The program is organized as a comprehensive online course. The semester has three compulsory class sessions, which are located at NTNU in Trondheim.

The work is divided into lectures, discussions, seminars, and group work. Students are expected to work independently, participate in professional development work in their respective practices, and engage in didactic reflection and communication on the digital learning platform.
