Voice and Voice Pathology

This course deals with anatomy and physiology related to respiration (breathing) and phonation (voice), categories of voice difficulties and disorders, as well as causal relationships, advice and treatment for various voice disorders.

Knowledge

After passing the exam, students will have in-depth knowledge of:

- respiratory anatomy and physiology

- the structure of the larynx and the internal and external muscles that regulate the voice

- phonation theory

- different normal and pathological voice qualities as well as differences between children, women and men

- functional, psychogenic, organic and neurological causes of voice difficulties in children and adults

- speech therapy treatment and counseling for various voice difficulties in children and adults

- good vocal hygiene and prevention of vocal difficulties for groups exposed to high demands on voice use

- use of tools for mapping voice difficulties

Skills

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

- combine theoretical and practical knowledge about voice use and conditions that affect it

- identify risk factors for the development of voice difficulties, identify voice difficulties and categorize these

- survey and implement relevant speech therapy measures, counseling and treatment

- evaluate the effect of treatment

- take the initiative for further investigation in other professional environments if necessary

General competence

After completing the course, the student will understand physiology and anatomy related to the voice and voice usage, as well as be able to understand and apply methods for identifying and mapping various voice disorders, and counseling and treatment related to these.

Lectures, skills lab and plenary discussions. The course has mandatory requirements. It is assumed that all students regularly use the current learning platform.
