Language and Speech disorders

The course provides a theoretical introduction to some of the most common language and speech disorders amongst children and young people that speech and language therapists encounter in their profession, including developmental language disorders (DLD) and speech sound disorders. The course focuses on terminology, assessment, counseling and treatment for the different disorders. The subject includes a minimum of 50 hours of clinical practice with speech therapists where the students' ability to build relationships with clients and reflection on their own practice is tested, as well as their ability to apply theory, research, experience and user knowledge in practical speech therapy work.

After passing this course, the student will have in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects related to

- various forms of language and speech disorders

- methods and tools for mapping language and speech disorders

- speech therapy treatment methods and measures aimed at various language and speech disorders

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

- critically reflect on one’s own practice in view of relevant theory and research related to the various components of language such as pragmatics, semantics, phonology/phonetics and syntax, as well as verbal learning and memory.

- carry out surveys for difficulties with language and speech, interpret results and implement advice and/or measures.

- evaluate the effect of measures at individual, group and a systemic level.

Lectures and plenary discussions. The course has mandatory assignments. It is assumed that all students regularly use the current learning platform.
