Master’s Course in Syntax and Semantics

This course consists of reading and assessing literature pertaining to syntactic and semantic theory and analysis. Syntactic frameworks used belong to the type ‘constraint based grammar’, such as HPSG and LFG, and semantic frameworks used are formal as well as conceptual.

The content and focus can vary somewhat according to the composition of the class.

After having taken this topic, the students should

- Have knowledge about up to date scientific original literature in morphology, syntax and semantics

- Be able to present and communicate problems and results in the field in the light of up to date original literature

- Be able to write coherent analyses in syntax and semantics using relevant models and theories
- Be able to formulate syntactic and semantic analyses using computational tools as defined for the frameworks used (such as LKB for HPSG, XLE for LFG)

Lectures and group instructions. More on assessment: Compulsory assignments must be approved before students are allowed to hand in the term paper. The size of the exercises must be between 10-20 typed A4-pages each (line spacing 1.5). The size of the term paper depends partly on the subject, but is usually between 15-30 typed A4-pages (line spacing 1.5).
