About this course
Content
The course deals with questions such as: What are the implications of two languages being related, and how does a language develop in time? How does a sound or the meaning of a word change, and how do new ways of inflection occur? How can we reconstruct an proto-language, and what occurs when a new language suddenly arises?
Learning outcomes
The objective is that the students get a general idea of the problems, methods and results within diachronic linguistics.
Teaching methods
Lectures and group instructions. More on assessment: Obligatory exercises have to be approved before the student may sit the written exam. The size of the exercises must be between 2-4 typed A4-pages each (line spacing 1.5). In special cases, at student request, a take-home exam may be arranged.
