About this course
Content
Arts and Crafts 2 (GLU 5-10) is based on Arts and Crafts 1 (GLU 5-10) and provides specialized knowledge through creative work, subject didactic reflection, and expanded insight into the subject's visual and material cultural foundation. Through the program, the student will further develop his / her own practical skills in the subject and gain experience with a selection of materials and working methods that provide learning outcomes in relation to the curriculum for primary schools, with particular emphasis on steps 5-10. The relationship between curriculum and practice is problematized through the critical examination of assignments, teaching, supervision, and assessment.
The course will communicate with and engage the students in scientific work methods. Exploratory learning processes should promote the students' independence, analytical skills, and critical reflection.
The course consists of six areas:
Visual and graphic arts, sculpture, design, architecture, art history and culture studies, theory of teaching and learning. The areas are based on and are a continuation of the work in arts and crafts 1 (5-10). Through work with the areas, the student will further develop its own competence in the subject in depth and breadth.
Visual and graphic arts is an exploration of the arts as a visual, aesthetic and communicative expression. Practical work with two-dimensional shape and digital image media is emphasized. Form, color, composition, and symbol processing are central themes.
Sculpture includes exploration of and work with sculpture as an aesthetic, visual, tactile, and communicative expression - both through different types of sculpture, installation, and land art.
Design challenges work on issues related to design and everyday aesthetics. In the work of creating objects that primarily cover practical needs, we work with suitable materials and techniques.
Architecture focuses on the experience of indoor and outdoor spaces that affect our everyday lives. Knowledge of local construction practice and national style orientations is central. Investigative and creative work is linked to the local community. Drawing and using digital software, and building different types of models, stimulate the awareness of three-dimensional spaces.
Art history and culture studies from ancient times to today; this areas focus will range from ancient artefacts to rococo in Norwegian and international art, design, and architecture.
These fields provide the basis for planning lessons and experiences, as well as the development of knowledge and awareness of different cultural expression. Through exploring different cultural expressions one can see oneself and others in a historical and cultural context.
Theory of teaching and learning is integrated in the subject matter. The field comprises organized learning in arts and crafts, the subject's historical development, relevance and legitimization as a general-purpose subject in primary school. The student will work with practical and creative processes to become a competent teacher and be able to use different forms of assessment which contribute to the pupils' learning.

Teaching methods
The program reflects the working methods of the current curriculum for primary and lower secondary school. The lectures will mainly take place in a group, while practical teaching in the workshops takes place in smaller groups. The practical individual work with materials will take place in the workshops under the guidance of a teacher.
A considerable amount of work is required through self-study, which is organized in separate periods, where the students work on tasks in the extension of self-chosen assignments. The program will alternate between your own practical and creative work, art history and cultural studies, theoretical studies, and teacher training. A reflection on one's own and others' work is central to the course.
The students will work with a specialization assignment that has a scope of one quarter of the program. The specialization emphasizes exploratory and practical creative work within a self-chosen assignment. The starting point for the work can be a theme, an epoch or a work of art, a target area, one or more materials, technique / equipment, aesthetic instruments, and the like. Your own creative work and related reference material are linked to didactic reflection. The work must be documented with a written report included in the assessment. The students will work with academic and current issues. Documentation of the students work processes can take place through an analog or digital log.
Several smaller excursions to exhibitions and gatherings in Trøndelag county can be important content in the study. In addition, an excursion is arranged for 3-5 days to a European city. In case of absence from the study trip / excursion, compensatory work is given.
