Art and Crafts 1 (1-7)

Arts and Crafts 1 (1-7) provides an introduction to visual and graphic arts, sculpture, design, architecture, art history and culture studies, and theory of teaching and learning. The student will gain experience with varied working methods and different materials that provide learning outcomes in relation to the requirements of the current curriculum for the 1st - 7th grade in primary school.

The student will work within practical and creative processes so as to become a competent teacher for pupils, and will learn to use different forms of assessment that contribute to the pupils´ learning. The course will convey and engage the students in scientific work methods. Exploratory learning processes should promote students' independence, analytical skills and critical reflection.

The course consists of six areas:
Visual and graphic arts, sculpture, design, architecture, art history and culture studies, and theory of teaching and learning.

Visual and graphic arts is an exploration of image as a visual, aesthetic and communicative expression. Practical work with the two-dimensional form and digital media are emphasized. Shape, color, composition, and symbol processing are central themes.

Sculpture includes exploration of and work on sculpture as an aesthetic, visual, tactile, and communicative expression, both through different types of sculpture, installation, and landscape art.

Design challenges work on issues related to design and everyday aesthetics. The students will work with design processes related to products that primarily cover practical needs.

Architecture focuses on the experience of indoor and outdoor spaces that affect our everyday lives. Knowledge of local construction practice and national style orientations is central. Investigative and creative work is linked to the local community. Drawing and using digital software, and building different types of models, stimulate the awareness of three-dimensional spaces.

Art history and culture studies focuses on Norwegian and international art from neoclassicism to contemporary art, as well as crafts, design, and architecture from prehistoric to contemporary styles. The field provides the basis for planning lessons and experiences, as well as the development of knowledge and awareness of different cultural expressions. Through exploring different cultural expressions one can see oneself and others in a historical and cultural context.


Theory of teaching and learning is integrated in the subject matter. The field comprises organized learning in arts and crafts, the subject's historical development, relevance, and legitimization as a general-purpose subject in primary school. The student will work with practical and creative processes to become a competent teacher and to be able to use different forms of assessment which contribute to the pupils' learning.

- can select appropriate materials, techniques, and hand tools suitable for the primary level, maintain tools and machines, and know security practices (HSE routines)

- can organize basic exhibitions, create different types of presentations, and activate pupils in exhibiting their own and others' art and design works

The student:
- can develop an idea to a finished product, document and evaluate their own creative process, demonstrate the practical approaches therein, and be a positive role model for the pupils

- can experiment with and use key materials, tools, and techniques when working with visual and graphic art, sculpture, design, and architecture
- can use basic analytical tools when working with visual and graphic art, sculpture, design, and architecture

- can use arts and crafts in interdisciplinary thematic and project work and safeguard the aesthetic dimension of the training in interaction with other subjects and beginner training

The program reflects the working methods of the current curriculum for primary and lower secondary school. The lectures will mainly take place in a group, while practical teaching in the workshops takes place in smaller groups. The practical individual work with materials will take place in the workshops under the guidance of a teacher.

A considerable amount of work is required through self-study, which is organized in separate periods, in which the students work on tasks in the extension of self-chosen assignments. The program will alternate between your own practical and creative work, art history and cultural studies, theoretical studies and teacher training. A reflection on one's own and others' work is central to the course. The students will work with both professional and current issues. Documentation of your work processes can take place through an analog or digital log.

Several smaller excursions to local exhibitions and gatherings is an important content of the course.
