Archives and museums – history and development

The course provides an introduction to the history and theoretical foundation of archives and collections; archival institutions and museums.

This course, and/or LBAS3002, may be replaced by other courses from the following faculties at NTNU or the equivalent at other Norwegian universities: Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, or by courses at universities abroad. The purpose of this option is not to to apply credits earned previously, but to offer students an alternative to the LBAS-courses within the same term.

Knowledge:
The student has general knowledge about
- the history of archives and collections
- the historical development of archival institutions and museums as cultural and social phenomena.
- the major theories of scholars in the field of archives and collections in the 20th century.


Skills/applied knowledge:

The student

- knows how to find information in books and articles about the history and theory of archives and collections, and how to write an academic text on the matter.


General competency:
The student
- can account for and discuss museums and archival institutions today on the basis of the history of their development.
