Text Course IV in Latin: Classical Poetry

This is a course on poetry (epic and elegy) from the Augustan era, both in the original language and in translation, with an emphasis on classical metre.

A candidate who has completed this course is expected to have acquired the following learning objectives, consisting in knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate

• has basic knowledge of Latin poetry (with focus on epic and elegy) from the Augustan period, as well as a general overview of the literary history of this poetry.
• has knowledge about the history of Roman poetry (especially epic and elegy).

Skills

The candidate

• is able to read, translate and interpret poetry (in the original language) from the Golden Age,
• is familiar with the central vocabulary of the texts of the syllabus
• is able to perform grammatical, stylistic and metrical analyses of these texts
• is able to relate Roman poetry (especially epic and elegy) to its literary, cultural and historical contexts.

Lectures. In addition there are activities consisting of six shorter translations that must be handed in to the teacher. Four of these are compulsory in order to take the exam. Final oral exam, where the student is expected to read with scansion, translate and comment on texts from the syllabus.
