Text Course III in Latin: Ancient prose II

This course offers a further study of the different genres of latin prose of antiquity (with particular emphasis on the imperial period). Latin syntax and stilistics are studied in greater depth.

Students at this course are expected to meet the following learning objectives, divided into knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

Students

• should acquire further knowledge through the reading of Latin prose texts from the so-called Silver Age of Latin literature, as well as an overview of the history of the Roman prose literature from this period (Tiberius to Trajan).

Skills

Students

• should acquire the skills of reading, translating and interpreting prose texts (in the original language) from the Silver Age, performing grammatical and stylistic analyses of these texts and relating them to their literary, cultural and historical contexts, as well as being able to translate from Latin to Norwegian.

Lectures. Among the activites are six smaller assignments, which have to be handed in, consisting in translations. Four of these assignments are compulsory.
