Text Course II in Latin: Antique Prose I

This course offers an introduction to different genres of classical Latin prose, and to deeper aspects of Latin syntax and style.

A candidate who has completed this course is expected to have acquired the following learning objectives, consisting of the following knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate

• has knowledge of Latin prose texts (with an emphasis on historiography) from the late Roman republic and early imperial age (the so-called Augustan golden age),
• basic knowledge of the history of Roman prose literature from this period (with focus on historiography).

Skills

The candidate

• has acquired skills for reading, translating and interpreting prose texts (in the original language) from the late Roman republic and early imperial age,
• is familiar with the vocabulary of the Latin texts of the syllabus of the course
• knows how to grammatically and stylistically analyse these texts and
• knows to some degree how to relate these texts to their literary, cultural and historical contexts.

Lectures. Among the activities are six smaller assignments, which have to be handed in, consisting in simple translations from Latin to Norwegian (or English if preferred). Four of these assignments are compulsory.
