Text Course I in Latin: Medieval Latin

This course is an introduction to the different literary genres of the Middle Ages, as well as an introduction to the use of Latin as a means of communication and cultural transfer in this period.

A candidate who has taken this course is expected to have acquired the following learning objectives, consisting of the following knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate

• has basic knowledge of Medieval Latin language and literature
• has basic knowledge of the history and significance as a foundation for Western culture of Medieval Latin.

Skills

The candidate

• has acquired skills to to read, translate and interpret texts (in the original language) from the various periods and genres of Medieval Latin literature,
• is familiar with the central vocabulary of the texts of the syllabus
• is able to perform grammatical and stylistic analyses of these texts and
• is able to relate these texts to their literary, cultural and historical contexts.

Lectures and seminars. Among the activities are six smaller assignments, which have to be handed in, consisting in three simple translations from Latin to Norwegian (or English if preferred). Four of these assignments are compulsory.
