Sámi Topics in School

The course will consider important questions that teachers should be familiar with, work with and reflect over when working with the LK20 curriculum's competency aims on Sámi topics in the classroom. Based on the content of the new curriculum, this course will enhance knowledge on topics relating to indigenous peoples. These topics will include, among other things, Sámi history, language, culture and identity, and didactical approaches to these topics in the classroom.

The following themes will be covered during the course:

• Content in the curriculum.
• Didactic approaches.
• Sámi language relations and language revitalization.
• Introduction to the South Sámi language.
• Introduction to South Sámi history.
• Development of own research-based activities for use in classrooms and dissemination in other contexts.

A student who has completed the course is expected to have achieved the following:

Knowledge:

• Have knowledge about the inclusion of indigenous topics in the curriculum.
• Have basic knowledge about Sámi - and especially South Sámi - history, language and culture.
• Have developed their own awareness of topics relating to indigenous peoples and decolonization.
• Has insight into school policy matters that are important for the Sami language.
• Has a beginning knowledge of the South Sámi language.

Skills:

• Can develop suitable materials for teaching and other dissemination.
• Can critically analyse representations of Sámi history, culture and language.
• Can understand and interpret content about indigenous peoples in the curriculum.
• Can analyse and look critically at teaching materials.

General skills:

• Can assess own practice with subject knowledge of Sámi conditions as a basis, and reflect over own learning.
• Can convey relevant subject content and communicate in a way that is suitable for the group at which it is aimed.

Teaching will be over approximately 11 weeks. Teaching will include both written and oral activities which cover different themes, and use different forms of communication for cooperation and interaction between students. Students will during the course of the semester write up to five texts as compulsory assignments. These texts will cover different aspects of the course, and feedback will be given on these in the form of written comments and/or guidance. Three of these texts will be chosen for the portfolio, which will be submitted as the exam.

Teaching is offered in both in Norwegian and in English. Joint lectures can be in English, but group discussions and written work can be done in Norwegian. The reading list is available in both languages.
