Globalization Theory

The term globalization is used to describe numerous phenomena and processes. The course focuses on social and cultural processes of change viewed in relation to economic globalization. Students will gain insight into theories of globalization as well as the driving forces behind various aspects of globalization. Important theoretical debates will be examined, such as questions like whether or not we are approaching a more homogenous world; the significance of the local in meeting with the global; and the question of change and continuity when global meets local. Via examples students will discuss if and how the concept of globalization can provide new and fruitful perspectives for understanding contemporary social developments.In lectures and seminars one will draw on the department's competence on environment, gender, ethnicity and migration.

KULT3320 is a fundamental course in MSc in Globalization, and includes common activities such as courses in academic writing, computer courses, guest lectures and student presentations.

The course objective is to provide students with insight into the concept of globalization and the discussions associated with it by studying the most significant literature on globalization theory.

Before the students are allowed to do the final written assignment, they must pass an oral presentation.
