Norway as a gender equality country. History, culture and knowledge

The course gives students insight into key aspects of today's Norway in the fields of gender equality and diversity. The course has both a historical component that introduces students to key changes and processes back in time, and a contemporary component where they are presented with key topics from that societal debate. Although the main focus is on Norway, emphasis is placed on seeing Norway as part of an international community.

Students of this academic course have knowledge on:

• how equality and diversity play out in different areas of society
• central historical happenings and processes in these fields
• how Norway and Norwegian culture and practice is positioned and related to other countries and societies

Students of this academic course have skills in:

• acquiring research-based knowledge on relevant aspects of society
• discussing relevant questions of current interest
• reflect critically upon various historical processes and knowledge traditions
• disseminating academic knowledge orally and written

The course is compulsory for all master students in equality and diversity. The teaching activities include lectures, group work and individual assignments. At the end of the course there will be a home exam graded with letter grades. As a prerequisite for taking the exam, the student must have submitted and been approved for two compulsory exercises. Participation in class is seen as important, and the student has to attend at least 75% of the lectures.Students who do not meet the attendance requirement may, upon application to the department, be allowed to complete a compensatory assignment. The compensatory work will be adapted to the extent of the absence and may be written and/or oral.
